Irancy: a sheltered bowl above the Yonne
A line from the plateau north of Irancy, down through Côte du Moutier and the village, to the Yonne at Vincelottes. Tap a layer to read it.
Swipe the plate sideways to see the whole section.
Schematic. The line runs north to south through Irancy. Les Cailles is pinned on the slope toward Vincelottes; its exact parcel is not checked. Épineuil (near Tonnerre, about 30 km east-north-east) grows on similar Kimmeridgian slopes. The Côte Saint-Jacques at Joigny (about 35 km north-west) is a different rock altogether, Cretaceous chalk with flint, and is described in the notes, not drawn. Bed heights to be checked against the BRGM 1:50,000 sheet for Auxerre.

Why Irancy ripens Pinot this far north
- The village sits in a bowl of slopes facing south-east, south and south-west, sheltered from the north by the plateau.
- Kimmeridgian marl and limestone on the slopes, as in Chablis; hard Portlandian on the flat tops.
- Côte du Moutier faces due south in the heart of the bowl; Les Cailles faces south-east toward the Yonne.
- At Joigny, the Côte Saint-Jacques is another world: clay with flint over soft Turonian chalk, south-facing above the Yonne at 135 to 210 m.
Did you knowIrancy may include up to 10% César, an old local red grape. Only about 5 ha of it are left.
