Côte de Nuits · Section through Chambolle-Musigny

Chambolle-Musigny: limestone, and the fan of the Combe Ambin

A line across the Combe Ambin and down through Les Cras, Les Gruenchers and Les Groseilles. Tap a layer to read it.

Swipe the plate sideways to see the whole section.

Seen from above, on the same scale: the section is cut along the line A–A′. Premiers and grands crus in coloured pencil; the vineyards we pour from in ochre. Vineyards: INAO, Délimitation parcellaire des AOC viticoles (2026), Licence Ouverte 2.0.

Schematic. The line runs due east just north of Chambolle village; Les Noirots lies 150 m north of it and Bonnes-Mares 450 m north. The Clos de Vougeot is 1.5 km south, on the same beds and the same heights, so it is drawn dashed at its real height. Layer heights follow the general Côte de Nuits sequence and are to be checked against the BRGM 1:50,000 sheet for Gevrey-Chambertin; the fan of red silt and limestone breccia follows producer descriptions of the Combe Ambin cone.

Why Chambolle is the perfumed one

    1. More limestone and less clay than any other Côte de Nuits village: the premiers crus above the village are on fissured Bathonian rock with thin, pale soil.
    2. Les Cras sits right on that rock; Les Gruenchers a little lower, on marlier limestone with more clay.
    3. The Combe Ambin funnels cool air down at night and spread a fan of red silt and broken limestone below the village, where Les Groseilles grows.
    4. Clos de Vougeot, 1.5 km south, runs the same beds from thin limestone at the top to deep clay by the road, inside one wall.

Did you knowChambolle's soils are so light in clay that the old growers called the best of them 'terres blanches'. Bonnes-Mares, just north of Les Cras, is split between white soils and red ones.
