Patti: the hills behind the Tyrrhenian coast

North to south from the coast at Patti, across the Timeto valley, up into the hills where Antica Tindari grows its vines. Tap a layer to read it.

Swipe the plate sideways to see the whole section.

Schematic, and kept simple on purpose: the bedrock is drawn as two broad units (flysch sandstone and clay over the Peloritani metamorphic basement), from general knowledge of the area, not a surveyed sheet. Patti lies 0.4 km off the line. Antica Tindari's vineyards are placed only by their stated height (450–700 m). Our records tag these wines “Etna DOC”, which is wrong: Patti is on the Tyrrhenian coast, in Mamertino country, about 50 km from Etna. Check against the ISPRA CARG sheet for Patti.

What sets these hills apart from Etna

    1. The soil is sandstone and clay, not volcanic sand: more water held, rounder texture.
    2. The vines sit at 450–700 m, high enough for cool nights.
    3. The Tyrrhenian is a few kilometres away, and its air reaches the hills.
    4. Local grapes, Nocera and Nero d'Avola, ripen dark here without losing freshness.

Did you knowMamertino takes its name from the Mamertines, mercenaries who seized Messina in the 3rd century BC. The Romans prized Mamertine wine.
