Salento: red earth between two seas
Across the heel of Italy, from the Ionian coast below Ugento over the low Serre ridges to the Adriatic. Tap a layer to read it.
Swipe the plate sideways to see the whole section.
Schematic, with very strong vertical exaggeration: the highest ground here is under 170 m. The three rock units are the standard Salento sequence; their boundaries are hand-placed. Terra rossa is patchy and drawn far thicker than it is. Ugento lies 2 km off the line; the Feudo d'Ugento vineyards are placed only roughly. Check against the ISPRA sheets for Gallipoli and Ugento and the Puglia SIT maps.

Why Salento Primitivo is ripe but not jammy
- Terra rossa holds water in pockets, so old vines get through hot summers.
- The porous limestone drains fast, so roots go deep and yields stay low.
- No vineyard is far from the sea: sea air softens hot days and nights.
- Bush-trained vines shade their own fruit.
Did you knowAlong the line drawn here the Ionian and Adriatic coasts are only about 35 km apart.
