Mâconnais · Section from the Roche de Solutré to Fuissé

Pouilly-Fuissé: tilted blocks under the Roche de Solutré

A line from behind the Roche de Solutré, over the rock and down the tilted beds to Fuissé. Tap a layer to read it.

Swipe the plate sideways to see the whole section.

Schematic. The line runs north-west to south-east from the Roche de Solutré to Fuissé. Luquet's Saint-Véran La Grande Bruyère is at Davayé, about 2 km north; the Beaujolais crus are 15 to 25 km south on granite and schist and are listed without pins. The terrain model smooths the cliff, so the rock reads lower than its true 493 m. Only the two main units are drawn, and younger beds on the dip slopes are left out. Dips and the fault are drawn to show the tilted-block structure; the section has not been checked against the BRGM 1:50,000 sheet for Mâcon.

Why the Mâconnais is rounder than the Côte d'Or

    1. The rock is broken into tilted blocks: west-facing limestone cliffs, with long dip slopes and marl hollows behind them.
    2. More marl and clay, and more sun: Chardonnay here ripens earlier and fuller.
    3. Where the limestone is close under the vines (high on the dip slopes), the wines tighten up; that is the logic of the 22 Pouilly-Fuissé premiers crus approved in 2020.
    4. Saint-Véran wraps around Pouilly-Fuissé on similar ground; Davayé's Grande Bruyère is clay-limestone at 245 m.

Did you knowPouilly-Fuissé had no premiers crus until 2020, when 22 were approved, chosen on history, altitude, slope and soil.
