Côte de Beaune · Section from Saint-Aubin over the hill to Puligny

Saint-Aubin to Puligny: over the Montrachet hill

A line from Les Frionnes, across the Saint-Aubin valley, over the crest at the Murgers des Dents de Chien and down through Les Folatières to Puligny. Tap a layer to read it.

Swipe the plate sideways to see the whole section.

Seen from above, on the same scale: the section is cut along the line A–A′. Premiers and grands crus in coloured pencil; the vineyards we pour from in ochre. Vineyards: INAO, Délimitation parcellaire des AOC viticoles (2026), Licence Ouverte 2.0.

Schematic. The line runs almost due east. La Garenne lies 450 m north of it and En Créot 450 m north on the Saint-Aubin side; Sous Roche Dumay 200 m north of Sur Gamay. Le Montrachet and Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet lie 0.8 to 1.2 km south on the same hill, and Chassagne beyond; their wines are listed here without pins. Beds are drawn flat across the hill; the Argovian cap on the crest follows merchant and grower descriptions of the Murgers, to be checked against the BRGM 1:50,000 sheet for Beaune. Les Murgers des Dents de Chien sits on the line between Sur Gamay and La Garenne; it is shown on the plan.

Why one hill gives two kinds of white

    1. The same hard Bathonian limestone sits under both faces, close to the surface, with very little soil.
    2. Saint-Aubin's premiers crus face south and south-east into a side valley, higher and cooler: tauter, more saline.
    3. Puligny's face looks east to the plain; Les Folatières and La Garenne climb steeply toward Blagny over thin, stony ground.
    4. The crest is capped with white marl. Lower down, Le Montrachet and its neighbours sit where the slope, the rock and the warmth come together.

Did you knowSaint-Aubin's Murgers des Dents de Chien is named for the limestone teeth that poke through the soil. It sits just over the crest from Chevalier-Montrachet.
