Côte de Nuits · Section through northern Nuits-Saint-Georges

Nuits-Saint-Georges, the Vosne side

A line down the Nuits slope on the Vosne border, through Aux Chaignots and Aux Murgers to the plain. Tap a layer to read it.

Swipe the plate sideways to see the whole section.

Seen from above, on the same scale: the section is cut along the line A–A′. Premiers and grands crus in coloured pencil; the vineyards we pour from in ochre. Vineyards: INAO, Délimitation parcellaire des AOC viticoles (2026), Licence Ouverte 2.0.

Schematic. The line runs down the northern Nuits premiers crus, 1.5 km north of the town. La Richemone and Aux Cras lie 200 to 400 m north of it; Aux Thorey and Aux Bousselots 300 to 450 m south, in the same band. Vosne-Romanée's Les Rouges du Dessus and Échezeaux lie 2 km north on the same beds and are listed without pins. Layer heights follow the general Côte de Nuits sequence, to be checked against the BRGM 1:50,000 sheet for Nuits-Saint-Georges. Vineyards more than about 400 m off the line are drawn dashed at their real heights, not their place on the line.

Why north Nuits tastes like Vosne

    1. These premiers crus share Vosne's band of hard Prémeaux limestone and thin, pebbly soil.
    2. The slope is steep at the top and gentle at the bottom, so soil deepens quickly downhill and the wines gain body.
    3. South of the Meuzin, toward Prémeaux, the Combe des Vallerots fan and deeper marly soils give firmer, more tannic Nuits.
    4. Up on the plateau at 300 to 400 m, the Hautes-Côtes ripen a week or more later and give leaner, brighter wines.

Did you knowNuits-Saint-Georges has no grand cru, but Les Saint-Georges, south of the town, was proposed for promotion and the growers have formally asked for it.
