Savigny to Corton: two slopes and a hill
A line from La Dominode across the Savigny valley, up Les Lavières and Les Fichots to Corton-Charlemagne. Tap a layer to read it.
Swipe the plate sideways to see the whole section.
Seen from above, on the same scale: the section is cut along the line A–A′. Premiers and grands crus in coloured pencil; the vineyards we pour from in ochre. Vineyards: INAO, Délimitation parcellaire des AOC viticoles (2026), Licence Ouverte 2.0.
Schematic. The line runs south-south-west to north-north-east, across the valley rather than down a single slope. Aux Gravains, Aux Serpentières and Aux Guettes lie 300 to 900 m west of it on the same south-facing slope as Les Lavières; Corton Les Fiètres lies 750 m east, low on the Aloxe side of the hill. Savigny and Pernand villages are off the line. Beds are drawn flat; the classic Corton-hill sequence (Bathonian, Callovian, Oxfordian marl, Rauracian cap) is to be checked against the BRGM 1:50,000 sheet for Beaune.

Why the same village gives two kinds of Savigny
- The Rhoin valley splits Savigny into two slopes that face each other.
- The north side (Les Lavières, Aux Gravains, Aux Serpentières, Aux Guettes) faces south and south-east over flaggy limestone: firmer, stonier, more mineral.
- The south side (La Dominode, Les Peuillets) faces east and north-east over sand, pebbles and iron-tinged clay: softer, darker fruit.
- Climb the hill and the rock changes again: white Oxfordian marl under Corton-Charlemagne, hard limestone and woods on top.
Did you knowLes Lavières takes its name from 'laves', the thin flat plates of limestone in its subsoil. The same word turns up all over the Côte wherever the rock splits into slabs.
