Meursault: Narvaux, Genevrières, Charmes
A line from the plateau down through Les Narvaux, the tip of Genevrières, Limozin and Charmes to the plain. Tap a layer to read it.
Swipe the plate sideways to see the whole section.
Seen from above, on the same scale: the section is cut along the line A–A′. Premiers and grands crus in coloured pencil; the vineyards we pour from in ochre. Vineyards: INAO, Délimitation parcellaire des AOC viticoles (2026), Licence Ouverte 2.0.
Schematic. The line runs north-west to south-east about 1.5 km south of Meursault village; Perrières lies 300 m south of it. Les Durots, Les Charrons and Les Pellans are on the flatter ground nearer the village, and Monthélie, Auxey-Duresses and Saint-Romain lie 2 to 6 km north-west up the Auxey valley; their wines are listed here without pins. Soil depths are from grower notes and merchant sources that do not always agree; layer heights are to be checked against the BRGM 1:50,000 sheet for Beaune. Vineyards more than about 400 m off the line are drawn dashed at their real heights. Les Narvaux is placed from the growers’ descriptions.

Why Meursault changes so much down one slope
- At the top, Les Narvaux sits on hard Bathonian limestone with almost no clay: tense, lean, stony wines.
- Mid-slope, Genevrières and the upper Charmes have clay-limestone of moderate depth over marly rock: floral, balanced.
- Lower Charmes has much deeper soil on a gentler slope: broad, generous wine.
- North of the village the slope turns to Pinot ground: Santenots and Caillerets continue Volnay, and Volnay-Santenots is grown inside Meursault.
Did you knowMeursault grows some of the Côte's best red as well as white: Volnay-Santenots comes from vineyards inside Meursault, sold under Volnay's name when planted to Pinot Noir.
