Côte de Beaune · Section through southern Beaune

Beaune and Pommard: the long slope south of town

A line from the plateau down through Les Aigrots, Pertuisots, Les Sizies and Les Avaux to the edge of Beaune. Tap a layer to read it.

Swipe the plate sideways to see the whole section.

Seen from above, on the same scale: the section is cut along the line A–A′. Premiers and grands crus in coloured pencil; the vineyards we pour from in ochre. Vineyards: INAO, Délimitation parcellaire des AOC viticoles (2026), Licence Ouverte 2.0.

Schematic. The line runs due east through the southern Beaune premiers crus. Les Montrevenots lies 300 m south of it, up a side combe; Drouhin's Clos des Mouches 500 m south; Pommard's Épenots about 1.2 km south-west, across the Avant-Dheune valley mouth. Les Bressandes, Les Teurons and Les Reversées are 1 to 2 km north on the same slope. Beds follow the BIVB Beaune and Pommard sheets (Oxfordian marls and limestone high, Argovian marls low); positions to be checked against the BRGM 1:50,000 sheet for Beaune. Vineyards more than about 400 m off the line are drawn dashed at their real heights; Les Aigrots, on the line, is shown on the plan.

    Why Beaune is the middleweight

    1. The slope is long and even, with no single combe dominating, so the premiers crus run in one broad band.
    2. Hard Bathonian limestone sits under thin, iron-tinged clay mid-slope: firm but rarely heavy.
    3. South toward Pommard the soils turn sandier and more limestone-rich; Pommard itself, just past the Avant-Dheune valley mouth, gets deeper clays and more iron.
    4. Below the fault, younger Oxfordian marls and deep alluvium make richer, softer ground.

Did you knowGarrey's 'Les Sizes' is spelled Les Sizies on the official INAO plan. Burgundy is full of these double spellings; growers keep the old ones on their labels.
